The history of Christmas in July

Christmas in July (also known as Yulefest or Yuletide) is a wonderful, festive event that is celebrated in Australia and other countries in the Southern hemisphere. As July is generally the coldest month of the year, Christmas in July social parties and events are commonly held to celebrate the winter, and the halfway point to Christmas.

In Australia, Christmas day (25 Dec) is in the peak of summer & typically a day spent outdoors. Many Australian’s miss out on the Christmas atmosphere that is enjoyed in the Northern hemisphere during winter. This includes winter fireplaces, traditional roast lunches and dinners, rich Christmas puddings and snow.

Christmas in July is the perfect opportunity to indulge and experience the wonderful aspects of the Northern hemisphere Christmas. Social events include lunches, dinners and other festive activities with the intention of mimicking the festivity of Christmas. It's always a great excuse for work colleagues or the family to get together for a festive party and usually includes Christmas trees and decorations, fairy lights, candles, bon bons, Christmas hats and other festive decorations.

In recent years, Christmas in July celebrations have rapidly grown in popularity. Leading the charge have been hotels, lodges, clubs and restaurants located in the cold mountain regions and the Australian snowfields. Today, the Christmas in July celebration has also spread to the major cities and into private households.
