    Penguins are some of the most comical and loveable creatures in nature. That is one reason why they are popular subjects for use in Christmas decorations. Penguins are usually found in Antarctica, also known as the South Pole, where they live in large numbers known as colonies. They are most active during the months of September and October, which is springtime in that part of the world. Mother penguins scoop out areas of snow and dirt, line the pit with stones and use it as a nest where they typically lay two eggs.

    Both the mother and father penguin take turns, either staying at the nest to keep the eggs warm and safe, or venturing out to sea to feed on krill, squid and fish. Penguins, with their black and white tuxedo-like appearance, are fascinating animals. Although their coats may appear furry, they are really made of thousands of tiny feathers. In recent years they have been used more and more in Christmas decorations.

    Baby penguins hatch in December, not long before Christmas, which is the warmest time of year in Antarctica. The mother and father penguin continue to take turns caring for the baby penguins until they are old enough to be left alone for short periods of time. The young penguins frolic playfully with other youngsters in their colony. By March, the young penguins are strong and old enough to begin foraging for their own food.
