How did toy trains become identified with Christmas? Toy trains have been popular Christmas decorations for over a century. They have been around since the first railroads were constructed. In 1891, the German toy company, Marklin, came out with the first toy train set. The idea was to add pieces and build your train set as the years went by. These train sets were popular Christmas gifts for young boys. The trains moved by using a windup mechanism.

By 1897, The U.S. toy company, Carlisle & Finch, had come out with an electric train set powered by batteries. This gave the train operator more control and people began including trains in with their Christmas decorations by laying track around their Christmas trees and enjoying their train set as it circled the tree. In the early 1900s, the Lionel Company designed some electric trains to place in store windows at Christmas. The idea was that the moving trains would draw shoppers’ eyes to the items for sale in the windows. Surprisingly, many shoppers were more attracted to the trains than anything else, and Lionel went on to become one of the most successful toy train manufacturers ever.

Today, trains continue to be popular Christmas decorations among people of all ages. This fun lighting display features a multi-function train with flashing lights. The first train carriage holds a cheerful red candy cane. The three-dimensional display measures 1.6 metres x 50cm x 18cm, with a 1.5 metre lead. It can be used indoors or outdoors. A delightful decoration, the flashing train will be an amusing addition to your lawn display at Christmas or a stunning feature inside a large room in your home. The lighted decoration is also ideal for businesses, particularly those that sell children’s items. Consider adding this entertaining piece to your decorative Christmas displays this year.
