    There's a story that says that the history of the Christmas stocking started years ago when St. Nicholas put gold in the stockings of three peasant sisters who had hung up their clothes by the fire to dry. It was also thought that writer Clement Clark Moore and Illustrator Thomas Nast made the tradition more current by depicting stockings hung "by the chimney with care" in the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," or as it's more popularly known, "The Night Before Christmas."
