    Reindeer have featured prominently as Christmas decorations for more than 100 years. Paper-mache reindeer, which are still popular today, are believed to have first been made in the early 1900s, and since then, ornamental reindeer have been made with ceramic, metal and plastic, among other materials. Reindeer became part of Christmas folklore when Clement Clark Moore published the poem. A Visit from St Nicholas ('Twas the Night Before Christmas) in 1823, which introduced the world to Santa's eight reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. It's quite incredible that the most well known of reindeer, Rudolph, also started as a character in a poem. Rudolph was created by department store employee Robert L. May, who penned "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" to give to children at the store. Little was he to know that this social outcast who would come to guide Santa's sleigh would capture the imagination of millions around the world. Rudolph boosted the popularity of reindeer, and there's barely a Christmas tree that doesn't have reindeer-themed Christmas decorations hanging from it.
