Christmastime holds a special magic for children. There is no other time in their lives when the figure of Santa Claus will hold such a special significance. In addition to all of the presents, there are also all of the delicious goodies and holiday parties, plus a good, long break from the school yard. When entertaining children at during the Christmas season, it is best to include decorations. An array of fairy lights, glittering tinsel, assorted ornaments and festive toys can transform any space into Santa's Workshop. Some ornaments in particular appeal to the young as well as they do to the young at heart. Items such as train sets, animated toys, Santa hats, Christmas crackers and snow globes are a wonderful way to brighten up Christmas vacation for the little ones.

1. Train Set

Train sets are a Christmas favourite, especially when they are set up at the base of the Christmas tree. It is not well known what exactly makes trains so Christmasy. Perhaps it is the preferred method of transportation in the North Pole. Boys and girls adore setting up the little tracks and watching the train cars go round and round a city of merrily wrapped boxes. Trains are considered to be a collector's item for hobbyists. Many people enjoy setting up a little train in a tiny Christmas village, and they may add to their collection each year with a new building, figurine or train car.

2. Animated Toys

Another popular collector's item for the Christmas season is animated toys that dance and sing. From penguins and polar bears to ducks and dogs, or even a living, breathing Christmas tree, there are enough animated toys to fill a mantelpiece. For some reason people love these dancing, single Christmas animals and cannot get enough of them. They make great gifts for the whole family as well as a neutral holiday sentiment for friends and co-workers.  For something a little more refined than a cartoon character, fibre optic animations can make lifelike recreations that are beautifully adorned.

3. Santa Hats & Headwear

The great thing about a classic piece of headwear like the Santa hat is that you can wear it with anything - birthday suits, swim suits, Santa's helper uniforms. But those with an appreciation for the unique will also like elf hats, extra-long sequined caps, reindeer antlers and Christmas tiaras. Your furry friends can get in on the hat action with their very own Santa hat headband. You can even turn your car into a magical flying herbivore with the car antlers and red nose. Cheap and plentiful, plush Santa hats and reindeer antlers remind everyone what Christmas is really all about - wearing funny hats.

4. Christmas Crackers

Cracking open a Christmas bon bon to reveal the treasures inside is a pleasure that distinctly appeals to children. The brightly wrapped packages are similar to the Christmas presents that sit underneath of the tree. They add another element of fancy to holiday dining that can only be matched by splitting a wishbone or stockings stuffed with trinkets. It is possible to buy packets of premade Christmas crackers in quantities from less than ten to over fifty. For a Christmas gathering that includes children consider some of the designs with multiple colours and Santa Claus themes.

5. Snow Globes

When you shake a snow globe in order to stare at the tiny blizzard inside it hearkens forth the imagination of a small child. Who knows what mysteries and enchantment lay within those smooth glass walls? That is why it is important for every household to include at least one snow globe in their Christmas decorating scheme - especially if they have a family. Snow globes and wind up musical ornaments range from simple and traditional designs to carnivals full of rides, rotating windmills, ice ponds and skating elves. The tinkling melody of the music box somehow suits the scene within the domed glass.
